Whats Happening in the Garden

Soil Amendments

We had a long summer and our soil is in real need of attention. Soil health is so important to success in the garden. We want our soil alive and thriving with beneficial microbes, worms, and minerals. This will help your plants fight off pests and become healthy food for you and your family. If you compost, now is the time to add that along with worm castings, kelp, organic fertilizers, compost teas, rock dust, whatever you prefer for your soil. Add this on top of existing soil so as not to disturb existing soil microbes. This is our base...now the fun part! We can start planting our winter garden!

GREENS!!

Winter gardening in Phoenix is my favorite! Greens thrive here in the winter months. Now is the time to add these to your garden! Once your soil is topped off you can add things like lettuce varieties, kale, cabbage, celery and broccoli to your beds.

HERBS

This is a must! herbs in your garden attract beneficial insects. Did you know that dill provides a home for ladybugs from egg to larvae to adult? Its a great way to keep them around for a while while they eat insects that may damage your crops.

Not only is growing your own herbs a huge help to your garden, but it is also a huge help to your grocery spending. Herbs are so expensive per ounce! On top of that, nothing is healthier and more flavorful than fresh out of the garden food.

Root Vegetables

Root vegetables such as garlic and onions require the cooler weather to develop. Other roots like carrots, beets, turnips, parsnips, sweet potatoes, radishes and potatoes will do well in the winter months here in Phoenix. Plant some!
